Canvas Integration

World Book Online integrates with Canvas! This integration allows students to launch World Book Online directly from a Canvas course or module. When a user launches World Book from Canvas, they are automatically logged in to a personal My World Book Account and can utilize features such as My Research and saving Timelines.

Integration instructions

Follow the steps below to integrate World Book Online as an external resource in Canvas.

Email slhelp@worldbookonline.com with your account name and a request to integrate with Canvas. We will provide the Consumer Key and Shared Secret needed for integration.
Within an existing course in Canvas, click Settingsfrom the side menu and then select the Apps tab.
Search "World Book".
Select the World Book Online icon and click Add App.
Enter the consumer key and shared secret provided by World Book.
Note: If you do not know the consumer key and shared secret, email slhelp@worldbookonline.com to obtain these.
Once you have entered the consumer key and shared secret, World Book Online will be available within the course. Note: Users might need to refresh the page for World Book Online to appear.

Student view

Once the school has established the connection, students can launch World Book Online from within a course or from a module if a teacher set up links on the module.

Most schools will have a Canvas icon on their website, or users can go to https://canvas.instructure.com/login/canvas
Note: If a school has Clever or Classlink, they may log in with their Clever or Classlink credentials and launch Canvas from there.
Students can click on a course from their dashboard, or select the courses icon on the left.
From within any course, they will see a link to World Book Online in the side menu, or within a module if the teacher has added this to a module.
Selecting World Book Online from the side menu (which is most common), will launch World Book in a new tab with the student automatically logged in to their My World Book Account.
Selecting World Book Online from the module will launch World Book inside of Canvas and automatically log the student in to their My World Book Account.

Steps to add World Book Online to a module

Once a connection is established, teachers can add World Book Online to modules within a course.

Select Modules within a course and then click the plus sign to add a new module. Or, select an existing module.
Click the plus sign to add material to the module.
From the drop-down menu, select External Tool.
Choose World Book Online, then Add Item.
World Book Online is now available as a tool within the module.
When students launch from the module, World Book will open within the Canvas platform and they are automatically logged in to their account.
