Important People

Important People provides a simple search and browse interface for young users to locate biography articles. The feature includes several thousand biographies on historical figures, popular culture figures, and other people of interest.


Search

There are two ways to use Important People. A user can either conduct a search or browse.

To direct a search, follow the steps below.

  1. Select Important People from the feature container.

  2. Enter a name or keyword into the search box to search the full text of all biography articles. For example, the search results for Alexander Graham Bell will be retrieved if a search for "Bell" or "telephone" is entered.

  3. Press enter or click Go! to conduct the search and land on the search results page.

  4. Click on a name to open the article.

Browse

If you're not sure who you want to look up, you can browse by job or achievement.

  1. Select Important People from the feature container.

  2. Scroll to Browse by job or achievement. Use the arrows to reveal additional categories.

  3. Once you select a browse category, you can further filter biographies using three other options: gender, country or cultural heritage, and time period.

  4. Once one category is selected, the options in the remaining categories are automatically filtered to display only options for which categories are relevant to earlier choices. For example, upon selecting Explorers from the area of work or interest dropdown, only decades for which explorer biographies are available will display in the time period dropdown.

  5. To change a filter category, click Reset and you’ll be able to choose again.

  6. If you remove all filters, you will be prompted to Choose one or more options above to find matching biographies.
