Grasshopper

A grasshopper is a jumping insect. Grasshoppers live in most parts of the world. Most kinds live on the ground. Most grasshoppers are green, black, brown, or gray.

A grasshopper has five eyes and two antennae, or feelers, on its head. Like all insects, it has six legs. It uses its two powerful back legs for jumping. It walks on all six of them. Most grasshoppers have two pairs of wings. The front wings protect the back wings, which the grasshopper uses for flying.

Most grasshoppers eat plants. Some are pests that can destroy whole fields of crops.

When people touch grasshoppers, the insects “spit” a brown liquid. This liquid may help protect grasshoppers from attacks by other insects.
